Austin Child Guidance Center (ACGC) accepts physician-referred patients for comprehensive psychological assessment. Our psychologists use evidence-based tools to identify cognitive, emotional, and behavioral issues and assist in diagnosing conditions such as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, anxiety, and mood disorders.
Through structured testing, clinical interviews, and information from families and educators, we provide diagnostic clarity and individualized recommendations to support treatment planning and intervention.
Please note: ACGC does not conduct evaluations for gifted and talented programs, disability determinations, or legal purposes.
A psychological assessment involves structured testing with the child, as well as interviews with the child's parent, caregiver, or guardian, and gathering information from teachers or other relevant sources. Most assessments include 1 to 2 testing sessions, depending on the reason for the evaluation and the child’s individual needs. The entire process, from interview to diagnosis, typically spans 6 to 8 weeks.
Common Reasons for an Assessment
Parents, caregivers, guardians, and medical professionals may seek an assessment to address concerns such as:
- Why is my child struggling in school?
- Does my child have ADHD?
- Does my child have an autism spectrum disorder?
- Why is my child experiencing ongoing emotional or behavioral difficulties?
- What strategies can best support my child’s development and well-being?
Psychological assessments play a key role in diagnosing ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, depression, and other emotional or behavioral concerns. These evaluations provide valuable insights to guide treatment planning and intervention.
Referral Process
ACGC accepts referrals only from licensed physicians. Self-referrals are not accepted. If you believe your child would benefit from an evaluation, please speak with your child’s primary care provider or pediatrician to request a referral. Referrals may be faxed to (512) 454-9204.
Who We Cannot See
For safety and ethical reasons, there are certain individuals who are not eligible for psychological evaluations at ACGC:
- Individuals with active eating disorders
- Individuals who have had recent inpatient hospitalizations
- Individuals involved in open CPS cases
- Individuals who are currently experiencing active crisis situations that require immediate intervention
- Individuals who are currently engaged in active legal proceedings related to custody or criminal matters
- Individuals with a history of recent suicide attempts
- Individuals with current substance use that may interfere with the evaluation process
Additionally, all parents or legal guardians must provide consent for the assessment to proceed.
If your child falls into any of these categories, we recommend seeking appropriate care in a setting that is better equipped to handle these specific needs.
Assessment Results
Following the completion of the assessment process, a feedback session will be scheduled with the parent(s) or guardian(s) to discuss findings. ACGC will provide a comprehensive written report outlining the evaluation results, diagnostic impressions, and tailored recommendations for next steps.
