Traumatic incidents can impact individuals, but they also impact the community. In Central Texas, we are a community, and the July 4th floods left an impact on all of us. While adults are still processing the damage and loss, many caregivers are also grappling with a difficult question: How do we help children understand and cope with what’s happened?
At Austin Child Guidance Center (ACGC), we know that children respond to traumatic events in unique ways. They may feel scared, confused, or withdrawn, and they look to adults for guidance and reassurance. If you're wondering how to support your child through this difficult time, here are some key strategies from our trauma-informed therapists.
1. Limit News Exposure
It’s important to stay updated, but constant news coverage, especially of destruction or loss, can overwhelm children. Limit the amount of time your child is exposed to the news or social media updates about the floods. Instead, find age-appropriate ways to talk about what’s happening and assure them that they are safe.
2. Let Children Lead the Conversation
Every child processes events differently. Let them ask questions or express their feelings in their own time and way. Some may want to talk, others may show their distress through changes in behavior. Whatever their reaction, validate their feelings, whether it's fear, sadness, or confusion, and let them know it's okay to feel that way.
3. You Don’t Have to Have All the Answers
As a parent or caregiver, it’s natural to want to reassure your child with certainty. But it’s okay to admit that you don’t know everything. What’s most important is that your child feels emotionally supported and protected. Reassure them that you are there for them, and you will learn and get through this together.
4. Maintain Routines to Provide Stability
In times of crisis, routines help provide a sense of normalcy, structure, and calm. Try to maintain regular mealtimes, bedtimes, and other daily activities as much as possible. Predictability can help children feel safer and more secure amid chaos or change.
5. Stay Calm and Monitor Your Own Feelings
Children are highly sensitive to the emotional reactions of the adults around them. If you are feeling anxious, upset, or overwhelmed, take a moment to check in with yourself before responding to your child. Modeling calmness and reassurance helps children feel safer and more secure.
When to Seek Professional Help
Every child is unique, but certain signs may indicate it’s time to get outside support. Consider reaching out to a mental health professional if your child is experiencing:
- a loss of interest in favorite activities
- excessive worry or anxiety, persistent sadness
- intense or frequent tantrums
- aggressive behavior
- nightmares or sleep disturbances
- severe mood swings
- disruptive behavior at home or school
If emotional or behavioral challenges are getting in the way of your child’s daily life or development, don’t wait. Support is available, and early help can make a lasting difference.
