Our Mission is to Provide Mental Health Treatment for Children

Austin Child Guidance Center is a nonprofit that provides accessible, high-quality mental health services to children and their families to empower them to thrive in childhood and beyond.

Child Mental Health Services

We provide a variety of mental health services to support children and their families all across Central Texas. They include Individual and Family Therapy, Group Therapy, Psychological Assessments, and Community Workshops. Our clinical services are offered in English and Spanish and provided both in-person and via tele-therapy.

As of August 2025, we have open appointments for Individual & Family Therapy services. We are also accepting new Psychological Assessment Referrals from physicians.

We Offer a Sliding Scale

Here at ACGC, we don’t want the cost of treatment to be a barrier to mental health care or add to the stress of families seeking care.  As part of our effort to serve all families, especially those with financial needs, ACGC offers a sliding fee scale. We consider circumstances such as household income and family size and regular/standard living expenses to calculate the percentage of service fees qualified clients will be responsible for paying.

Who We Are and How We Work

Our clinical staff of licensed therapists, social workers, and psychologists are dedicated to providing high quality, evidence-based treatment to your child and family regardless of ability to pay. Our therapists work with each family to help determine your goals and develop a treatment plan. Together, we identify your desired changes, ways to achieve those changes, and set goals.

Individual & Family Therapy

Individual & Family therapy helps family members better understand each other, support one another and work through difficult situations. With your therapist, we will work together to support both you and your child. We also provide group therapy in Austin to provide additional counseling and support for families. Free caregiver workshops are available as a resource as well.

Psychological Assessments

Psychological Assessments help gain a better understanding of your child's mental health. In addition to helping parents and professionals better understand your child, psychological assessments are used to diagnose ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, depression, anxiety, and other emotional and behavioral difficulties.

Special Programming - Free Therapy Services

We offer special programing and FREE services to help children and families who need our services access the care they need and deserve. Learn more about what is available for those who need it most, including crime victims and families in the Rundberg area of Austin.

Guidance for Caregivers: Supporting Children After the Central Texas Floods

Traumatic incidents can impact individuals, but they also impact the community. In Central Texas, we are a community, and the July 4th floods left an impact on all of us.   While adults are still processing the damage and loss, many caregivers are also grappling with a difficult question: How do we help children understand and cope with what’s happened?

At Austin Child Guidance Center (ACGC), we know that children respond to traumatic events in unique ways. They may feel scared, confused, or withdrawn, and they look to adults for guidance and reassurance. If you're wondering how to support your child through this difficult time, here are some key strategies from our trauma-informed therapists.

1. Limit News Exposure

It’s important to stay updated, but constant news coverage, especially of destruction or loss, can overwhelm children. Limit the amount of time your child is exposed to the news or social media updates about the floods. Instead, find age-appropriate ways to talk about what’s happening and assure them that they are safe.

2. Let Children Lead the Conversation

Every child processes events differently. Let them ask questions or express their feelings in their own time and way. Some may want to talk, others may show their distress through changes in behavior. Whatever their reaction, validate their feelings, whether it's fear, sadness, or confusion, and let them know it's okay to feel that way.

3. You Don’t Have to Have All the Answers

As a parent or caregiver, it’s natural to want to reassure your child with certainty. But it’s okay to admit that you don’t know everything. What’s most important is that your child feels emotionally supported and protected. Reassure them that you are there for them, and you will learn and get through this together.

4. Maintain Routines to Provide Stability

In times of crisis, routines help provide a sense of normalcy, structure, and calm. Try to maintain regular mealtimes, bedtimes, and other daily activities as much as possible. Predictability can help children feel safer and more secure amid chaos or change.

5. Stay Calm and Monitor Your Own Feelings

Children are highly sensitive to the emotional reactions of the adults around them. If you are feeling anxious, upset, or overwhelmed, take a moment to check in with yourself before responding to your child. Modeling calmness and reassurance helps children feel safer and more secure.

When to Seek Professional Help

Every child is unique, but certain signs may indicate it’s time to get outside support. Consider reaching out to a mental health professional if your child is experiencing:

  • a loss of interest in favorite activities
  • excessive worry or anxiety, persistent sadness
  • intense or frequent tantrums
  • aggressive behavior
  • nightmares or sleep disturbances
  • severe mood swings
  • disruptive behavior at home or school

If emotional or behavioral challenges are getting in the way of your child’s daily life or development, don’t wait. Support is available, and early help can make a lasting difference.

ACGC is Here to Help – Free Services

At ACGC, we are offering FREE 1-2 trauma-informed therapy sessions to children and families impacted by the Central Texas floods. Our trained therapists are here to help children process trauma, reduce anxiety, and begin to heal.
